Itzam Zapata (FI)


He began his studies in Mexico City at the “Escuela Superior de Música” with Josefina Robles in guitar and Jorge Ritter in composition. Later he continued his studies in Finland at the Sibelius Academy with Lauri Kilpiö where he currently studies the master of composition, he also studied as a exchange student in the Mozarteum, Salzburg, under the tutelage of Tristan Murail.

His work has been performed by several ensembles, like the Le Nouvel Ensemble Moderne, Ostrobothnia Chamber Orchestra, Uusinta, Avanti!, Orquesta de Camara de Bellas Artes, among others.
Recently he was awarded 1st prize in the Frank Robert Abell Young Composer Competition for New Chamber Music for his work Piñatas, Glitter and Stilettos, he was also awarded the “Coup de coeur du public” for his work The Poetry of Negation in the FORUM2014, the “Sonic Landscape” prize in the 2nd IFCM Composition Competition for his work On Desire for choir. In 2007 his guitar work Luz Detenida was selected to be recorded and edited by
the Russian guitarist Nadia Borislova, and in 2008 his guitar duo recorded a disc with contemporary music for two guitars by Mexican composers including his own work Anaidea.

He has been invited to several festivals in Mexico, Cuba and Finland, as well as the UNM in Mälmö, Sweden, the Gresham Center in London, UK, for a collaboration with VOCES8 , and the FORUM 2014 in Montreal, Canada.

The piece is divided in 3 parts depicting a different type of cognitive/affective state related to sleep and dreaming;
A: Wakeful state (daydream), rational, logical and ordered, the mind often escapes to the world of imagination by daydreaming.
B: Hypnopompic state, relates to the partially conscious state that precedes complete awakening from sleep. In the hypnopompic state, emotional and credulous dreaming cognition are trying to make sense of real world stolidity.
C: Hypnagogic state, relates to the state of intermediate consciousness preceding sleep. In this state rational waking cognition tries to make sense of nonlinear images and associations.
