Joss Smith
Composer
Joss Smith is a Welsh composer who works within various mediums, ranging from purely sound orientated works to electronic music, instrumental theatre and performance art. A linking factor between these different approaches is the use of expectation to build tension and subvert compositional narratives. Joss has had works performed by a number of ensembles, including Aurora Orchestra, Ensemble X.Y, Aurora Trio, Esbjerg Ensemble and Ensemble UPROAR. Recent accomplishments include being a part of Psappha Ensemble’s 2018-19 Composing for… scheme and being commissioned to write a piece for the Listenpony concert series. Joss has a Master’s degree in composition from Det Jyske Musikkonservatorium in Aarhus, Denmark where he received tuition from Simon-Steen Andersen, Juliana Hodgkinson and Niels Rønsholdt and has completed a Bachelor’s degree at the Royal Academy of Music where he studied with Huw Watkins, Tansy Davies and Gary Carpenter with additional tuition from Peter Maxwell Davies and Oliver Knussen.
