Motivated by the wish to create a forum for contemporary classical music concert scene in Tampere, the contemporary music ensemble TampereRaw was founded by a group of musicians from Tampere Philharmonic Orchestra in 2001. The leading idea behind was to gather musicians seeing contemporary music open-mindedly and to give more spotlight to newer music. These values led to organizing an ensemble that nowadays consists of 17 musicians and a conductor. TampereRaw performs both as a whole and in smaller chamber music groups up to 14 times a year – their busiest year so far being 2018. The ensemble aims at collaborating with living composers by commissioning new pieces and by regularly including premieres in their programme. Many Finnish composers, such as Jouni Kaipainen, Tapio Tuomela and Lotta Wennäkoski, have collaborated with them. Their programme, broad both by contemporary music genres and year of composition, includes as many as 111 composers among which are a number of young Finnish composers having studied composition at Tampere Music Academy. During the recent years the ensemble has also been part of numerous cross-disciplinary creative projects with artists from a variety of fields beyond the one of classical music.
In addition to regularly performing in their base-town Tampere, TampereRaw has also participated to music festivals around Finland as well as Estonia. The ensemble has close collaboration with their partners Tampere Philharmonic Orchestra, Tampere Hall, Tampere Biennale contemporary music festival and Tallinn Music Week.
