Explore how Scottish and Nordic folk traditions intersect with contemporary, classical, and improvised music in this workshop. Discover lesser-known aspects of Scottish music, such as piobaireachd, puirt-a-beul, strathspeys, and Gaelic psalm singing, and how they relate to Norwegian Hardanger fiddle traditions. The facilitators will share their creative process, discussing functional versus listening music, aesthetic and ethical considerations, and compositional techniques. MICRO MIXER:
TALKING IS FORBIDDEN: A SILENT JAM
TUESDAY @ 10:00-11:30

Join Polina Pohozha for a wordless jam where sound, movement, and presence take the place of speech. Talking is off-limits, but everything else goes: play, move, listen, or simply be. It’s a party where communication happens without words. Be quiet, but make noise. Bring any instrument, your body, or just curiosity.

MICRO MIXER:
TROMBONE CAFE: EXPLORING THE CONTEMPORARY
TUESDAY @ 12:30-2:00

Join Jón Arnar Einarsson, Principal Trombonist of the Iceland Symphony, for an interactive gathering exploring the limits of the contemporary trombone. Participants are welcome to bring along sheet music, ideas or questions to the event.

MICRO MIXER:
SOUNDING LISTENING SESSION: A GENERATIVE DEEP LISTENING SENSIBILITY
WEDNESDAY @ 10:00-11:30

What if it’s all made up? How can we compose without composing?

In this micro-workshop led by Oslo-based composer and sound artists Ferdinand Schwarz, participants will explore listening as a generative act of contingency and community. Treating listening as a kind of imaginative phantasy, participants will experiment with alternative ways of engaging the world and creating music. Drawing from practices by Viv Corringham, Pauline Oliveros, and Brandon LaBelle, participants will work with text pieces, voices, mobile phones, discussion, and small instruments. No prior experience is required—just curiosity and openness.

MICRO MIXER:
CHOIR LAB: CONTEMPORARY VOICES
WEDNESDAY @ 12:30-2:00

Join Adrianna Kubica-Cypek for an interactive session exploring contemporary choral music. The workshop will focus on Kubica-Cypek’s own cycle Four Seasons for 16 voices a cappella, alongside research on the music of Canadian composer Murray R. Schafer. Together, we will discuss the role of synaesthesia in Schafer’s scores, and how these ideas have shaped their compositional approach. Participants are encouraged to bring questions, reflections, or examples from their own choral practice to share.
